Where to Put Dash Cam in Car? [2024] Ask Dash Cam

Where to Put Dash Cam in Car?

|

A common and very popular question is where to put dash cam in car. Mainly, dash cams are made to be placed straight and in the middle, but you can place them differently, considering the right filming angle.

I recommend placing a dash cam in your car since you will never know what will cross your road. However, choosing the right filming angle is important because it affects the quality of the video.

Here is my guide on where to put dash cam in car, and how to adjust the lens to capture the best angle without lowering the video’s quality.

Where to Put Dash Cam in Car

The most common placement of the car dash cam is behind the rearview mirror. It is best to place the cam in the middle of your windshield so that it can film everything in front.

Depending on the dash cam type, you can either stick it on the windshield or attach it to the rearview mirror. Just ensure it is placed in the center under a good angle.

Many dash cam models have different filming angles, but it generally is 140 to 160 degrees. Only rare models have up to 170-degree filming angles. Some models have a dual camera so that one of its sides will capture the passengers and the driver.

When mounting the dash cam, you should ensure it has access to a power source, has good emergency sensors, and is easy to remove.

Also, you should consider its color to ensure it is less visible from the outside. Black cameras are the best choice because they are discreet wherever mounted.

Things to Consider When Mounting a Dash Cam

Mounting type

Every manufacturer has different types of dash cams. The most common mounting types are suction mount, double-sided tape mount, and rearview mirror attach.

The suction mount is the most common and easiest mounting method since it allows you to install and adjust the dash cam effortlessly. You can also remove the dash cam when your car is parked and mount it again on the windshield when you drive.

As a drawback, I will mention that this method is not 100% stable and might shake the cam, resulting in an unclear image.

Another mounting method is with double-sided tape. This method gives much clearer footage. As a drawback, I have to mention that this mounting method might cause difficulties in adjusting and removing the cam.

Discretion

Another important factor regarding where to put dash cam in car is discretion. Having a dash cam in a visible place might make your vehicle a theft target.

This is why the dash cams are tiny and black in most cases and do not draw attention. Choose a small dash cam with good resolution and place it near the rearview mirror.

Also, choosing a dash cam in a color that matches your vehicle interior is best if you want to keep it discreet.

Obstacles

It is essential to place the dash cam where no obstacles will ruin the footage. For example, sunshine, shaded dots, and windshield wipers are the things you should avoid if you want to have good-quality footage.

Place the dash cam in the windshield wipers range so that the rain or snow will not ruin the footage quality. Also, sunshade dots or tint might be an obstacle for the camera’s filming angle, and it is best to lower and adjust the dash cam until it captures a clear angle.

Removing process

Removing the dash cam is as important as mounting it. The removal process should be easy. If you opt for the double-sided tape mount type, ensure the tape is not stuck directly on the cam. This will make the dash cam difficult to remove and possibly damage the device.
